What do I do if I have a situation that demands immediate help?
If this happens during office hours, contact the Service Centre. With issues that cannot wait until the following day, ring security at 97 53 00 06.
I have primary responsibility for a child. Can I receive housing benefits if I live in Student housing?
Residents that have primary responsibility for a child can apply for housing benefits from the House Bank (Husbanken). You can read more information about the process here.
Do I pay the semester fee at Student housing (SiTo)?
The semester fee cannot be paid at student housing. All inquiries must be taken to the student office (Studentkontoret) at the University of Tromsø.
Oh no! I saw a rat/cockroach/beetle at my student home! Who can I contact to get rid of it?
If you have seen a pest we ask you to immediately contact the Service Centre or send a message to the head security office. Since students travel more than other groups of people, there is unfortunately a higher risk that pests move in, but only if we receive a message will we take responsibility for getting rid of it immediately.
If this scenario scares you or you don’t want to be put in this situation, we recommend that you keep your kitchen clean and tidy, without leaving food for the pests. The garbage must be thrown in the container and not set on the ground around the residence.
Do the student residences have parking spaces?
Parking availability depends on the residence. Parking outside of marked areas can result in towing. Rather than notifying the cars, they will be removed without warning. Similarly, cars that hinder snow removal or garbage disposal will also be removed.
Am I as a resident in Student housing insured?
Our insurance does not include our resident’s properties. All private residents must have their own insurance and we strongly urge residents to have their own insurance. If you are still registered with your parents you may be covered under their insurance, so make sure to check before moving in.
Can I smoke in the residence?
It is not allowed to smoke in the common areas of the student residences according to smoking law.
Which address should I submit in my moving message to the National Registry (Folkeregisteret)?
When notifying the National Registry of moving you should include the address that is listed on the sticker in the doorframe at the entrance door to the unit. Normally you will get the address when moving in.
Is there a telephone in the residence?
Telephones are not installed. The residents themselves must sign up for a subscription to get a landline.
I have my own furniture. Can I use it in Student housing?
If you have room you can have your own furniture. Be aware that it is not allowed to remove furniture that was previously in the residence.
How long notice do I have?
The rental contract can be cancelled with one month’s notice, and should be submitted in writing via Your Page on boligtorget.no. To receive your deposit you need to give Student housing your new address.
The neighbours are partying and playing loud music. What do I do?
Take the issue up with your neighbors in a kind way. Refer to the lease and regulations. If this does not work you can contact us.
Where do I pick up the key for the place I'm renting from Student housing?
The keys can be picked up at the Service Centre in the Social Science building 2 (Teorifagbygget, Hus 2). During the beginning of the semester we have extended opening hours. You can have someone else pick up your keys with written authorization. The rent agreement must be signed and the deposit paid to receive your keys.
What can I do to prevent false fire alarms?
For maximum security the alarms are sensitive, especially for smoke and steam. Thus, take special care when cooking. False alarms undermine security and lead to large costs that can be charged to a tenant if there is proof of gross negligence.
How do I get a place to live?
You apply for a room via Boligtorget.no. Housing is assigned continuously after the application date. Placement is prioritized for first semester students and international students at the beginning of the semester in the fall. The application is active for two months including the desired move-in month. After the application is removed, you must give notice that you want the application to remain open
Can I sublet the residence?
You can apply to sublet for up to 6 months of the contract period. Additionally, subletting is allowed during summer months. The application form can be found one this page as a PDF. You can also contact Student housing by phone; 776 49030. Note that all subletting must be approved by Student Housing (SiTo)
Can I have pets?
Pets are not allowed in Student Housing residences, with the exception of Storelva, where it is possible to apply to have permission to have pets in the basement apartments, which have their own entrance.
When is rent due?
You will receive a bill that is due the 15th of each month. Payment postponement may be possible with permission from the rental office, telephone: 77 64 90 27. It is not possible to pay the rent in cash at the Service Centre.
I locked myself out. What do I do now?
During business hours you can contact the Service Centre. Outside opening hours, call the security service at telephone: 97 53 00 06. Here you will get help to unlock the door. The service costs you 300 kroner.
Can I hang up pictures/posters on the wall?
Yes, but you must be careful what method you use. We recommend use of small pins for hanging on the walls and ceilings. It is not allowed to use nails, screws, etc. We also allow the use of a type of sticky tack that can be purchased at the bookshop and used for lighter pictures/posters.
How does the contract work?
The rental contract is issued for one year. The total period of residence is based on the normal study period. All units have a 12-month contract period (residence for the whole year).
Can I change the electricity provider?
Student Housing (SiTo) has a set-price agreement with Ishavskraft. This includes all of our facilities. Apartments with their own electricity subscriptions are included in the agreement and tenants cannot use another supplier.
Can I move to another student residence?
Yes, you can apply for internal moving, either to another room in the same student house or to another student residence. The application is handled with the normal channels and priority is given based on application date. At the start of the autumn semester it is not possible to change housing until after september 15.Contact the Service Centre if you wish to change residences. The application is valid for two months and a changing fee of Nok 300,- must be paid if accepted. To move, a receipt must be presented and it provides a moving period of two days before you have to turn in the key to your previous residence. The tenant must also pay the rent for both units during this period.
I lost my keys. What do I do now?
During opening hours you can contact the Service Centre.. A new key costs NOK 400,- while a key card costs NOK 100,-. If the key or keycard stops working, the sum will be paid back to the student as long as there is no deliberate destruction of the keys. If the keys are not handed in on the move-out date, the tenant must pay for a set of new keys.
